Kosova, located in southeastern Europe has been inhabited for more than 8000 years and has a rich cultural and religious heritage since the Roman Empire split in AD395 when it stayed in the eastern part half of the Empire and under the Eastern church when Constantinople became the source of artistic inspiration. You can still find old churches in every town of Kosova from both Catholic and Orthodox faith.

Later on Ottoman Empire ruled the whole Ilyrian peninsula later named Balkan region for almost 550 years and left many religious sites behind in the form of Mosques, Muslim shrines and many Tekke’s from Sufi orders, but the most influential orders were the Bektashi and Halveti order.

Today Kosova is home to various religious sites that hold significance for different communities.

Here are some notable religious sites in Kosovo:

  • The city of Prizren also known as a museum city and well known for its multicultural heritage, with significant religious sites representing various faiths. The Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour is a Roman Catholic cathedral located in Prizren, serving as a place of worship for the Catholic community in Kosova. More than 44 Mosques that exists in this charming small town will trill you with the evening prayers. You will find the main Mosque of Sinan Pasha at the city center, built in the 17th century during the Ottoman era, which is a prominent Islamic landmark in Prizren. It features distinctive Ottoman architecture and remains an active place of worship for the Muslim community in Kosova.
  • Catholic Cathedral of Saint Mother Theresa in Prishtina is dedicated to Mother Theresa the only Albanian who won the Nobel peace price.
  • Deqani Orthodox Monastery- dating back to the 14th century, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's renowned for its stunning Byzantine architecture, exquisite frescoes, and its role as a center of Kosova Orthodox spirituality.
  • Grand Tekke of Junik-Sheh Xhaferi, is impressive and very interesting new building after the old Tekke was destroyed during 1999.
  • Patriarchate of Peja, the Orthodox complex consists of four medieval monasteries. These monasteries are important religious and cultural landmarks, representing the spiritual and historical legacy of the Orthodox Church in Kosova.
  • Bayrakli Mosque is located at the centre of Long Bazaar in Peja dated from 15-th century, and nearby the oldest building in this charming city is the Old Hammam-Turkish bath from 1478.
  • Another Orthodox monastery of Gračanica, is located near Pristina, the capital of Kosova. It's known for it’s impressive medieval architecture and beautifully preserved frescoes, which reflect the rich religious and cultural heritage of the region.
  • Hadumi Mosque in Gjakova, built with grey stones, ornate ceiling, wall paintings and beautifully decorated doors, dated from 1595.
  • Ulpiana is an ancient Roman city located near Pristina. Although it's not a religious site per se, it contains archaeological remains, including a basilica and other structures, reflecting the early Christian presence in the region.
  • In the city of Ferizaj on the same yard you will find Orthodox Church and the Mosque, which represents religion tolerance through the centuries in this region.
  • The small city of Viti is a home to Kosova’s most famous Catholic pilgrimage site located in Letnica village. Every august the festivities around the Assumption draw thousands of visitors from Kosova and Croatia.
  • Sultan Murad II Tomb close to Prishtina was the resting place of Sultan but later on it was moved to Bursa in Turkey.

These sites showcase the diverse religious and cultural heritage of Kosova, highlighting the coexistence and intermingling of different faiths throughout its history.
